Location
It is a medium-sized city in the northeastern corner of the Czech Republic, near the border with Poland. Carvinia's long history of successful and extensive treatment is linked to the discovery of the source of unique, naturally occurring solutions containing a high percentage of iodine and bromine.

History
The city is located east of Ostrava, on the east bank of the Ols River, near the Polish border. In 1949 its municipal area was expanded by absorbing the town of Freishtadt. Karvina is one of several coalfield mining towns in Silesia, producing high-quality coal. Other industries include the manufacture of chemicals (especially fertilisers), iron and gas plants.
